Telltale signs a tooth has to come out today

A tooth gets removed when nothing worth keeping is left: a crack that runs down through the root, a molar so eaten by decay that only thin walls of enamel stand, or an adult tooth so loosened by gum disease that it rocks when you chew.

Some teeth that look hopeless can be kept. The X-rays settle that. If a root canal or a crown would save the tooth, we tell you, and the choice stays yours. Wisdom teeth are covered on their own page: emergency wisdom tooth extraction.

Swelling under the jaw or up toward the eye, fever along with it, or any difficulty swallowing or breathing means a hospital emergency room before our office in Independence. Hospitals treat spreading infection and injuries; they generally don't treat the tooth itself. Afterward, call us for the tooth. A pocket of pus at the root is a different problem; the dental abscess treatment page covers it.

What happens at your same-day visit

X-rays come first, then a close look at the tooth and the gum around it. The images show how many roots the tooth has, whether they curve, and how close they sit to the sinus above the upper molars, or to the main nerve that runs through the lower jaw. That decides the method.

When the tooth is still whole above the gum, it's a simple extraction: we loosen it and lift it out in one piece. When it broke at the gum line, sits under bone, or has hooked roots, it's a surgical extraction: we open the gum, trim a little bone if needed, and remove the tooth in sections. Both kinds happen here.

You hear the diagnosis and get the price in writing before anything starts. After you agree, we numb the area and test it. You feel pushing and pressure, not sharp pain. Nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV sedation are available; tell us when you call so we can plan for it. You leave biting on gauze, with written aftercare instructions and our number.

Cost of an emergency tooth extraction in Independence, KY

Without insurance, the $89 is the exam and X-rays. We quote the extraction after the X-rays, because a single-rooted front tooth is one job and a molar that comes out in pieces is another. You see the figure in writing first.

If you have PPO or traditional dental insurance, your plan is billed for the exam and X-rays. Call with your card handy and we check before you arrive. Cherry, LendingClub and CareCredit are available; mention it on the phone. Our cost and insurance page goes into the rest, including what to have ready when you call.

Someone picks up the phone around the clock. Outside office hours it's an answering service; they write down your name, number and problem and put you in the first opening. Frequently asked questions

Will the tooth be taken out the same day I call?

Most of the time, yes. Call (859) 555-0147 during office hours and one of that day's slots is held for you. If the X-rays show there's no saving the tooth, and you've seen the written price, we take it out at that visit. When there's a large, active infection, a few days of antibiotics sometimes come first.

What's the difference between a simple extraction and a surgical one?

In a simple extraction, a tooth that's intact above the gum gets loosened, then lifted out whole. A surgical extraction handles a tooth that's broken at the gum line, held under bone, or anchored by roots that hook. We open the gum and bring the tooth out in parts. The X-rays show which you need.

What should I do after the extraction?

Keep biting on the gauze as long as we've told you to. For three days, skip straws, smoking and hard spitting, and don't rinse hard on day one. Each of those can pull the clot loose, and a dry socket hurts and heals slowly. Eat soft, cool food. If bleeding hasn't slowed by evening, call us.

Does an infected tooth always have to be pulled?

No. Infection at the root can often be treated with a root canal, which cleans out the inside of the tooth and keeps it in place. Extraction is for teeth with too little solid structure left, or a crack through the root. The exam shows which applies, and we explain both before you choose.
