Symptoms that point to an emergency root canal today
A tooth's nerve dies or gets infected for a few reasons: deep decay that reaches the pulp, a crack that lets bacteria in, or a hard knock from years ago. The pain often starts as a throb that wakes you at night. Heat makes it worse. Bite on that one tooth and you get a jolt. The gum beside it may puff up or grow a small pimple that leaks a bad taste.
Sometimes the pain fades on its own. That usually means the nerve has died, not that the problem left.
Not every bad toothache needs a root canal. A cavity short of the nerve gets a filling, and a cracked cusp may need only a crown, covered under broken tooth repair. If you're not sure, start with toothache relief. If swelling has spread into your face or neck, read dental abscess treatment first.
What happens at your same-day visit
X-rays come first. We study the root tips, where infection shows as a dark spot in the bone. We check how the tooth responds to cold and to light tapping, and we check its neighbors, since jaw pain can fool you about the source. Then you hear what we found and the price in writing. Nothing starts until you agree.
The tooth is numbed and tested. A small rubber sheet keeps it dry. We open the chewing surface, remove the infected nerve tissue, and clean and shape each canal with fine instruments and a bacteria-killing rinse. The canals are then sealed. What you feel is mostly vibration and pressure.
A back tooth that has lost a lot of structure usually needs a crown to keep it from splitting later. When that's the case, a CEREC same-day crown can be made in our office and placed at the same visit.
Nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV sedation are available for patients who want them. Say so when you call.
Cost of an emergency root canal in Independence, KY
Paying without insurance, you owe $89 for the exam and the X-rays. The root canal is quoted after the X-rays, since a front tooth and a three-rooted molar take different amounts of work. A crown, when needed, is its own line. You see every figure in writing first.
Patients with PPO or traditional dental insurance have the exam and X-rays billed to their plan. Call with your card handy and we check before you arrive. Cherry, LendingClub and CareCredit are accepted. Our cost and insurance page picks up the rest of the story.

Frequently asked questions
Will the root canal hurt?
The tooth is numbed fully and tested before we begin. You feel pressure and vibration. The toothache that brought you in usually eases once the infected nerve is out. For a few days afterward the tooth may feel tender when you bite, and over-the-counter pain relievers generally handle that.
Can the root canal be finished in one visit?
Often, yes. When the infection is contained and the canals are straightforward, the tooth is cleaned, sealed and, if needed, crowned at one appointment. A large abscess or a sharply curved root sometimes calls for medicine to sit in the tooth for a week or two first. We tell you which to expect before we start.
Should I just have the tooth pulled instead?
The written quote lists each option, and the choice is yours. A missing tooth lets the neighbors drift and loads the rest, and replacing it later is its own project. When a tooth can be saved, we say so. When it can't, we tell you that too, and the extraction is done here.
What if the pain goes away on its own?
Pain that fades usually means the nerve has died. The bacteria are still there, eating at the bone around the root. Months later it can flare up as an abscess, with the face swelling, with less tooth left to save. Call (859) 555-0147 while a root canal is still the simple answer.
